John Donne – Father of Metaphysical poetry
John Donne’s writing was stimulated and inspired by the time he lived. It was the time of Renaissance in England and began to form a new empire. It was an era that brought new power, knowledge with new explorations, intellectuals and new way for artistic lifestyle. So the new explorations began to enhance the knowledge of the scholars. In English literature the term ‘Metaphysical poets’ emerged at the same time. Samuel Johnson was the one who named it first. Metaphysical pomes were far more different from courtly love poems. As mentioned in Shakespearian sonnets those were on a superficial level when compare with metaphysical poetry. As it was an era for knowledge. Metaphysical poetry was rich with the images and facts from different spheres like philosophy, mathematics, science, history, geography, astronomy etc. especially in Metaphysical poetry there can be seen logical witty arguments. Most of the time the writers used colloquial language instead of using a conventional language. Metaphors were created through different spheres. Donne is considered as father of metaphysical poetry.
